15-17

Helsing breaks the news that Lucy bit the child. Dr. Seward doesn’t believe it at first but is taken back by Helsing`s confidence. then he decides to take Dr. Seward`s to Lucy’s grave to prove his point. They go to visit the victim where the doctor believes that the mark might be made by a rodent or a bat. After visiting the boy and having dinner they go to the churchyard to find Lucy`s tomb. Dr.Seward is uncomfortable while Helsing opens the tomb. He feel s as if it same as undressing her in her sleep. To their surprise, they find the coffin empty. Dr.Seward seems shocked by this but Helsing seems indifferent.

They waited there in the churchyard. After, long time Dr.Seward sees a white figure. He is unable to see exactly what that was. Then Helsing comes with a sleeping child and they decide to leave it in a full view so that a police can find him. Next day, they visit the tomb again and to their surprise find Lucy there. The surprise is that she looked more beautiful than ever. It was as if she was full of life and was never dead. Dr. Seward believes in him and asks him what he is going to do to which Helsing replies cutting her head off, filling her mouth with garlic and driving her stake through her body. But, Helsing decides to make Arthur aware of this first before doing anything.

Arthur decides to go and wait in the churchyard. Helsing leads the way and other followed. Again, they found the coffin empty.Quincey suspects Helsing and ask him whether it was his doing. Everyone waited for the white figure to appear. As the figure gets closer its appearance becomes much clearer –LUCY! It was indeed Lucy Westerna. She looked different than before. She wasn`t the innocent Lucy they knew. She was a different being with Lucy’s face.

Next day, they meet up at the church to finish off Lucy’s case. Arthur also agrees to it though he still seemed nervous. Helsing tells Arthur to hold a stake in his left and hammer in his right over her heart. Arthur drove the stake through her heart while Helsing read his prayers. The un-dead started to crumble up in pain and agony and finally rested. The horrible task was over.
When they looked back at the tomb they saw old Lucy again. Lucy was filled with innocence and purity. Arthur is finally allowed to kiss her. Quincey and Arthur are send outside and Helsing and Dr. Seward cuts off her head and stuff her mouth with garlic. Before parting they all promise to fulfil the horrible task together.

Helsing finds a telegram from Mina informing him about her arrival. He then asks Dr.Seward to allow her to stay her in his home because he would be leaving soon. Dr.Seward is also handed with a typewritten copies of Jonathan’s journal and Mina`s journal at Whitby. Helsing goes and mina arrives at the station.
He hasn’t still read the papers left by Helsing. As he waits for her, he tells that he must find a good opportunity to tell her everything and not frighten her while doing so. When Mina asks him to tell her everything about Lucy’s death he sounds a bit uneasy. It’s as if he doesn’t know from where to start and how to start it. even after Dr. Seward’s hesitation she says that he should read the typewritten copy of her and her husband`s diary. He gives in and lets Mina hear his diary kept in his phonograph. Later, she arrives with her teary eyes and says that she had typed in his words and his words seemed too painful. After dinner she types more of his entry and admits that she wouldn’t have believed it if she hadn’t read Jonathan’s diary. Jonathan arrives at Dr.Seward`s place. He is quite taken back his looks as he thought that he would meet a good specimen of manhood but Jonathan was a business like gentleman.
They are suspicious about Renfield`s behaviours and the one he calls his `master`. Lord Godalming and Mr. Morris also arrive there. Mina gives them a file kept in chronological order about Lucy’s death which she had typewritten. Finally, lord Godalming vents out his sorrows in front of Mina. He seemed full of pity. They promise to stand by each other in times of need.

chapters 13-14

A scene after a tragic incident. Lucy lies dead infront of her love and loved ones - more beautiful then ever. Arthur then return to his home to attend his father`s funeral.Helsing personally wants to sort out all the legal matters as he feel that Lucy`s last letter should be kept out of people`s sight. They also find out that Lucy`s mom had asked to transfer her property to Arthur in case she died.Helsing talks about amputating Lucy`s head and taking her heart out for medical examination which Dr. Seward disagrees at first but then agrees after persuation. The undertaker decorated their coffin in a really beautiful way to perfectly suit them. Helsing then places garlic on Lucy`s coffin and puts a small golden crucifix on her mouth. Later, he sees a maid going towards Lucy`s coffin but doesnt think much about it as he thinks that she is just going there to pay her last visit.

Next morning, Helsing rushes into Dr. Seward`s room and tells him that they cannot procced with the operation as someone had stolen the crucifix and he even found out who did it. The funeral takes place. All the people wonder if she had really died as her face seems to be more beautiful than ever. She seemed like she was sleeping.

Mina writes in her journal that Jonathan saw someone when they were out and seemed to be really shocked. He called him Count but was surprised that he seemed young. She gets a letter from Helsing informing her about Lucy`s death and tells her that he wishes to meet her.She was worried about Jonathan and reads his diary without letting him know. She is shocked on what she reads and then typewrites it in case Helsing wishes to know about Jonathan.

Next day they meet and discuss about Lucy. After searching for an opening she starts to talk about Jonathan and hands him with his journal. Helsing is really happy to read what it says which throws a ray of hope on Mina because he says that Jonathan wasnt hallucinating and there is something wrong going on and they will think of a way to stop it.

There is a short article about a lost child and him found lyign in a very weak condition with two punctured holes on his neck. Helsing shows that to Dr.Seward and asks what he thinks about it. The immediate answer that Sr. Seward gives it that it might have been the same thing that did wrong to Lucy. But, to his surprise Helsing says that it was Lucy!!

chapter 11-12

lots of tensions arise in these two chapters as we are told of Lucy`s conditions. At the start of chapter 11 Lucy`s conditions is said to be getting worse as her mother unknowingly took off garlic flowers from her neck. This time Dr.Seward performs blood transfusion as Helsing offers his blood in the hope of saving Lucy`s life.

For now Lucy gets better. Lucy also writes in her diary that she is feeling much better now and is starting to like the smell of garlic which she used to dislike earlier. On another hand, Renfield`s case seems to get more interesting as the days passed by. Dr. Seward mentions that Renfield came to his room late at night with dinner knife in his hand and slit Dr. Seward’s wrist and licked the blood that feel on the floor and went away right after that. This is an interesting incident because from his actions we may have come to know that Renfield might be a vampire.

Lucy writes down the incident that took place the night before and hides it in her breast so that people may know about it in case she dies. She writes down that she was feeling restless due to the unknown noise that came from outside her room. After a while, her mom came and she asked her to keep her company. Then suddenly something broke the window and came inside of her room- it was a wolf. In fear, Lucy’s mom grabbed onto anything that she could find in order to save her dear life but unknowingly she pulled out the garlic flowers from Lucy`s neck. Next thing that Lucy could remember was that her mother was dead and was lying next to her.

Next morning, Dr. Seward comes to Lucy`s house to check on her because Helsing sent him a telegram stating him to. But, no one comes to open the door after him severely ringing the bell. After some time Helsing joins him. they break into Lucy`s home after finding no one. When they go inside they are shocked with what they saw. Inside, Lucy and her mother were lying lifelessly. It was too late for her mother but not too late for Lucy. They did everything they could to bring Lucy back to life. They gave her warm shower and performed another blood transfusion. This time the one to give her blood was Quincey Morris. Lucy looked much better after receiving some blood. they sent Arthur a telegram stating Lucy`s condition and her mom’s death.

Meanwhile Mina writes a letter to Lucy saying that Jonathan was doing a partnership business with Mr. Hawkins. From this letter we are also hinted that she may not know Lucy and her mother`s conditions she says that she wanted to come down to visit her and her mom because they were ill. Mina sends another letter again saying that Mr. Hawkins had passed away.

Arthur arrives at Lucy`s home and she finally speaks up. But later that day Lucy`s conditions gets worse and she finally dies. Everyone in the room is shocked with this. Dr. Seward also mentions that her canine teeth were getting longer and before her death Lucy had talked in a different manner like she wasn’t Lucy but some other girl. After her death Dr. Seward says that everything is over but Helsing confuses him by saying that it is just a mere beginning.

Wednesday

chapter 8-10

lots of things happen in this 3 chapters. First of all , Lucy faces her biggest issue- sleepwalking, but thankfully Mina finds her before anything happen. But, the interesting thing is that of all the places to choose from, Lucy went to the church and that too on a full moon night. This is interesting because full moon is often associated with evil and it is told that all the evils are in their full potential in that night. This could be a mere coincidence or a sign of something deadly going to happen. The other thing was that Mina wrote in her journal that Jonathan wrote her and that he was sick. This is really confusing because we have heard no news of Jonathan after he attacked Count and was stuck in the castle. After that there is also the letter from Sister Agatha stating that Jonathan is in their care for six weeks. So did Jonathan succeeded from getting out of that place?
In chapter 9 Mina goes to attend Jonathan and sister Agatha tells her that Jonathan has been very sickly but couldn`t dare to say anything more. It is also hinted that Mina got married to Jonathan as she addressed herself to as Mina Harker and not Mina Murray. Dr. Steward mentions that his patient`s case has been getting more interesting. Mr. Holmwood also writes a letter to Dr. Steward stating that Lucy has been very well and it doesnt seem as if she has some illness ,but, is gradually getting weaker and weaker. in the reply to the letter, Dr.steward states that Lucy seems bloodless. This could have a literal meaning or could be a metaphor. Later, Arthur gives his blood to Lucy as she seems to be in a really critical condition. After Arthur left Dr. steward finds a mark in Lucy`s neck that seemd liked a two punctured holes. This could be the mark left by a vampire after biting its victim. But the important thing is who did it? Did the Count came to England?

Monday

chapter 6 and 7

Chapter 6

This chapter is made up of three parts - Mina journal , Dr. Seward`s diary and again Mina`s diary.

Mina `s jounal

This is a really great twist in the story as it leaves Jonathan`s point of view behind and follows the life from Mina`s point of view. Mina`s journey is really exciting to read as it gives readers smallest of the details and describes the surroundings in great detail ,so we as readers can picture the surrounding really well while we read it. This journal is about her meeting with Lucy and describing the place she is in. They talk about their love life at the enf of the day and Lucy talks about her upcoming wedding where mina feels a littel heart-sick as she hadnt talked to Jonathan for a whole month.

At the next part of her journal she expresses her sadness about Jonathan and Lucy. She talks about Lucy`s sleepwalking problem and a suspicious letter from Jonathan which she tells that he would never write like that. She also gives littele details like Mr. Holmwood being called because his father is sick and shows concerns for Lucy thinking that she would be lonely without him. She herself is feeling lonely without Jonathan and is constantly worrying about him. She is also concerned about the bad strom that is going to hit the country.

Dr.Seward`s journal
The journal starts from him talking about one of his patient whom he feels is really interesting. He then goes on describing about his patients habits and how he has weird pet hobbies like catching flies and spiders. He also tells that his patient might not exactly be wha he seems and may have some greter problem inside of him as he keeps on jotting down things hie notebook, the one he always keeps with him. At last he talks about how he wants to only be hopeless and work after Lucy`s rejection on which he doesnt show any anger towards her or her love.

Chapter 7

This chapter consists of a really long newspaper atrticle about a strom and is followed by Mina`s journal.

Newspaper article
The newspaper aticle is about the sudden strom disaster that hit the nation by surprise. This could be the storm that Mina was talking about in the previous chapter. It is shown that many people were caught in this storm and many of them died.

Mina`s journal

It was the night while the atrom took place and both Mina and Luvy were very restless and couldnt sleep. But, somehow Lucy got slept and woke up twice and dresses herself ,but fortunately Mina wook up just in time to undress her without waking her up and making her lie on the bed.

Next day they both goes to attend the funeral of the sea-captain.She explains that Lucy seemed restless but didnt knew the reason herself. Captain also had a face full fear and horror and people told that he died which he was fallen back from his seat as he was frightened. I think that the death of the man was really suspicous beacuse of his face and what the doctor told them.

chapter 5

This chapter is basically full of letters and telegrams exchange between the characters. This letters tells us about the relationships between the characters and give brief view on them. the first letter is from Mina to Lucy. In this letter we finally know that Mina is engeged to be married to Jonathan. This letter also indicates thatthey are really close as Mina is working really hard to match up with Jonathan`s studies and wants to help out. The surprising and more accurately confusing bit about this letter is that Mina tells Lucy that Jonathan wrote to her and said that he is coming back in about a week. This is surprising for me ,as a reader, as i know that Jonathan is trapped in Count`s castle and he couldnt havr written a letter.

The second letter is a reply to Mina from Lucy. This letter gives an in-depth information into close relation shared between Mina and Lucy as we come to know that they are chilhood friends and share lots of secrets. This letter also tells us about Lucy`s new found love. Another part is also a letter from Lucy to Mina where she tells her that three guys proposed to her in same day, but she refused as she already had someone she cared for. The first guy she refused was the doctor she mentioned in earlier letter. She told that she felt really bad for him as he look so unhappy. And the next person she refused was an American from Texas , a jolly fellow. She mentions that she didnt feel so bad for him as he was so straight-forward and a happy fellow. She mentions that he was really great as she gave him a kiss and tells that girls would even worship the very ground that he is walking on right now. The most surprising thing that Lucy says is that she felt so bad and that she couldnt marry all of the three guys like a man could. This is surprising because this novel was written more than 100 years ago and having that kind of thought shows her broad mind. She mentions that the third and last person that porposed to her was infact Arthur. The following articles are just a diary from Dr. Seward that tells about his camping trip and his letter to Mr. Holmwood telling him about it.

chapter 4

Jonathan wakes up next morning not knowing how he got there but, later presumes that he may have been brought by Count. He begins to notice small things like unwinded watch and folded clothes. This could mean that Count might have done this so that Jonathan may think that last night was just his vicious imagination. Then Jonathan begins to think the the very room that he is in right now is kind of like a sanctuary to him as nothing can be as dangerous as the three ladies he met last night.
He pays a second visit to the room, but, this time in a broad daylight. But, to his surprise he finds the door forcefully closed. He remembers Count asking him to write three fakes letters which he couldn`t oppose because he knows Count`s powers over him. The three fake dates that Count gave him to write in the letters gives Jonathan a faint hint on his death date.
He secretly passes his letters to Szany and signals them to post it but fears that Count may find out about Jonathan`s knowledge about Count. Next morning Jonathan finds all of his belongings gone including his notes, scrap papers, overcoat. Then he saw a man wearing his coat and heading to town. This could mean that Count may want to show other people that Jonathan was safe in Translyvania. He later follows a cry and finds a distressed woman asking for her child.

He then begins to make a theory that Count may sleep in the day which explains why he haven`t seen Count in daylight - ever. Now he wants to go and have a peek into Count`s room and even succeeds but finds nothing but old furniture that barely seems to have been used. Then he follows a door and ends up in an old chapel where Count laid - dead or asleep. He wants to clear his confusion and tries to find life in that body, but, to his shock finds no life in him and fleds away from there. Later Count tells him to go tommorow but Jonathan insists on going today and to his surprise Count opens all the doors. But, he thinks again and listens to Count and decides to leave tommorow.
A desperate man does eveything in his limits and even over it. And, Jonathan proves this by going to the Count`s coffin again and searching for the key to his eternal freedom from the demon`s castle. He then grows a strong desire to finish this monster from the face of the earth and hits him with the shovel and tries to runs away from there but fails. Then greed gets him and he wants to get the gold in Count`s room and escape from there and not be in the same castle as those bloodthirsty monsters.
